The Venoms host Mauritanian champions FC Nouadhibou at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, tonight as they begin their 2026/27 CAF Champions League campaign with their sights firmly set on reaching the group stage.

Vipers SC begin their latest quest for continental prominence tonight in the first leg of the CAF Champions League first preliminary round.

With a place in the group stage firmly established as the club’s immediate ambition, the Venoms know that a strong home performance will be crucial in laying the foundation for a successful qualification campaign.

The first assignment will be for them to take control of the tie before the return leg in Mauritania next weekend on Sunday. Simple!

Head coach Denis Lavagne has overseen meticulous preparations for the continental challenge, deliberately exposing his squad to demanding opposition to sharpen their competitive edge ahead of the Champions League.

Vipers tested themselves against established regional opposition, including Kenyan champions Gor Mahia and Nairobi United, while their only setback came against Rwandan powerhouse APR FC in the CECAFA Kagame Cup.

“We have prepared well. Did well against international teams like Gor Mahia. Only lost against APR FC in the Kagame Cup,” Lavagne told the press.

Those encounters have given the French tactician an opportunity to assess his squad against opponents accustomed to the intensity and demands of continental football.

But preparation alone will not be enough.

Vipers must now translate that work into a disciplined and authoritative performance against a Nouadhibou side arriving as Mauritania’s champions and determined to make the tie competitive from the opening whistle.

A strong start

Lavagne knows the importance of taking the initiative at Kitende.

“A difficult game because all the teams in this competition are big. We need to give a big performance and ensure we assume early advantage,” Lavagne stressed.

That early advantage will be particularly important in a competition where small margins can determine who progresses.

Vipers will therefore need patience in possession, defensive concentration and greater ruthlessness in the final third as they seek to put pressure on the visitors and establish a first-leg cushion.

The return of experienced forward Cesar Manzoki also offers the Venoms an added attacking dimension.

The Congolese striker previously enjoyed a prolific spell at Kitende and brings physical presence, intelligent movement and a proven eye for goal.

After Vipers were frustrated in their recent Uganda Premier League opener defeat to Entebbe UPPC FC, the expectation will be for the attacking unit to rediscover the intensity and cutting edge that produced a 3-1 victory over Kitara FC in the FUFA Super Cup.

For a side with ambitions of progressing deep into the Champions League, converting territorial dominance into goals will be essential.

One round at a time

For Vipers, however, the significance of Saturday’s fixture extends beyond the 90 minutes.

A convincing performance and positive result at Kitende would give the Ugandan champions valuable momentum heading into the return fixture, while placing them in a stronger position to negotiate the tie.

Lavagne has deliberately kept the bigger picture in perspective.

Rather than burdening his players with the weight of winning the entire competition, the 62-year-old has broken Vipers’ continental mission into manageable objectives.

“Target is to reach group stages. After that, the target will be to win a game, and then take it one game at a time.”

That measured approach underlines both the ambition and the realism surrounding Vipers’ continental campaign.

The immediate target is the group stage.

Beyond that, the Venoms will reassess, take the next challenge as it comes and continue pushing the club’s ambitions on the continental stage.

Big ambition

Vipers have repeatedly sought to establish themselves beyond Uganda’s borders, and a return to the CAF Champions League group stage would represent another significant step in that journey.

The club understands the scale of the task, and Lavagne has no interest in making extravagant promises.

“I can’t say winning the competition, I don’t think any Ugandan team has won it.”

From the gaffer’s analysis, the ambition remains high, but the route is built one round, one performance and one objective at a time.

First comes Nouadhibou.

With St Mary’s Stadium providing the stage and the home faithful behind them, Vipers will look to turn weeks of preparation into a commanding first-leg performance and take the first decisive step towards their continental target.
