Vipers SCs CAF Champions League journey came to an early end after the Ugandan champions were held to a goalless draw by FC Nouadhibou in the second leg of their first preliminary round tie in Nouakchott on Sunday.
The 0-0 stalemate left the aggregate score at 1-1 after Nouadhibou had held Vipers to a draw at St Marys Stadium, Kitende, and the Mauritanian champions advanced to the next round.
The Venoms travelled to the Stade Cheikha Ould Boidiya knowing they needed to find the breakthrough, but despite creating several promising openings, they could not produce the goal required to keep their continental campaign alive.
Vipers start with purpose
Vipers made a positive start as they searched for an early goal.
Farouk Miya won a free-kick just outside the box in the 10th minute, but the returning midfielder could not find a way through the Nouadhibou wall.
Usama Arafat and Karim Watambala were also involved in Vipers attacking build-up as the visitors looked to unsettle the hosts.
Nouadhibou, however, remained compact and disciplined, limiting Vipers to half chances while waiting for opportunities to threaten on the counter.
Watambala came closest to breaking the deadlock before the interval when he unleashed a powerful effort in the 35th minute, only for the ball to drift narrowly wide.
Arafat then had another opening three minutes before halftime, but Nouadhibous defence held firm to send the teams into the break level.
Venoms push after break
Vipers returned from the break with greater urgency, knowing that a goal would dramatically alter the tie.
The Venoms enjoyed spells of possession and pushed more players forward, but the Mauritanian champions defended deep and continued to frustrate their visitors.
Vipers worked the ball into promising positions, yet the final touch remained elusive as Nouadhibou protected the clean sheet that was keeping them on course for progression.
With five minutes remaining, the Venoms came agonisingly close.
Watambala found Yunus Sentamu inside the area and the striker created space for a shot after beating his marker, but his effort sailed just over the crossbar.
Late chance slips away
Vipers continued to search for a decisive opening deep into stoppage time.
Captain Milton Karisa picked out Cesar Manzoki, but the striker lost his footing at the crucial moment, allowing Nouadhibou to survive the final scare.
The final whistle confirmed Vipers elimination, bringing an end to their Champions League campaign at the first preliminary round.
Continental campaign over
The 1-1 aggregate scoreline leaves Vipers to reflect on opportunities missed across the two legs.
The Venoms had taken an early lead through Hillary Mukundane in the first leg at Kitende, but Sidi Ahmed Mohameds equaliser ensured Nouadhibou travelled home with a result that ultimately proved decisive.
Vipers created opportunities in both matches but could not turn their attacking pressure into the goals needed to settle the tie.
For Nouadhibou, the result secures progression to the second preliminary round, while Vipers must now shift their attention back to domestic competition.
Back to league action
The focus for Vipers now turns to the Uganda Premier League, with the Venoms set to host newcomers Ntugasaze FC at St Marys Stadium, Kitende, on Saturday. After their continental disappointment, Vipers will look to regroup quickly and begin their domestic campaign with renewed focus.
