Vipers SC’s turbulent start to the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League season descended into further disappointment on Wednesday, October 28, as the defending champions suffered a humiliating 1-0 defeat to Mbarara City FC at Rwamwanja Stadium.

Gadafi Kacancu emerged as the match-winner, delivering the decisive blow to condemn the Venoms to their second league defeat in just seven matches, an alarming regression for a side that navigated the entirety of last season unbeaten on the pitch.

The Venoms could have rescued something from the game, but Gusto Mulongo fluffed on three occasions when the goal was at his mercy.

Meanwhile, the result marked a far from pleasant beginning for newly appointed head coach John ‘Ayala’ Luyinda, whose first assignment following Denis Lavagne’s departure ended in frustration.

The defeat leaves Vipers stranded on 11 points from seven matches, having registered three victories, two draws and two defeats.

The champions have now surrendered 10 of a possible 21 points.

Vipers return to action on Saturday against URA FC at the Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo with hopes for redemption.
