Gusto Mulongo delivered a breathtaking individual performance, scoring twice and setting up another as Vipers SC dismantled Blacks Power FC 4-0 in a commanding Uganda Premier League encounter at Hoima City Stadium on Thursday.
The forward was the undisputed architect of the Venoms’ emphatic triumph, producing a devastating first-half display that effectively settled the contest before captain Milton Karisa emerged from the bench to complete the rout.
Mulongo’s brilliance was complemented by goals from Usama Arafat Kiza and Karisa, as Denis Lavagne’s charges registered their second successive league victory, extending their remarkable scoring sequence to seven goals without reply across their last two outings.
Having opened their title defence with a disappointing defeat to Entebbe UPPC FC, the reigning champions now appear to have rediscovered their attacking fluency, defensive discipline and, perhaps most importantly, the ruthless conviction expected of a side pursuing a third consecutive league crown.
It took just 12 minutes for Mulongo to announce himself in spectacular fashion. Ashraf Mandela delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area, where the forward rose to plant a perfectly executed header beyond the Blacks Power goalkeeper.
The early breakthrough established Vipers’ authority, but Mulongo was far from finished tormenting the hosts.
In the 29th minute, the forward exchanged his goalscoring boots for those of a creator, supplying the decisive pass for Usama Arafat Kiza to double the visitors’ advantage.
The combination between the two attackers epitomised Vipers’ growing cohesion in the final third, with their movement, precision and understanding repeatedly unsettling the Blacks Power defence.
And just when the hosts might have hoped to escape into the interval with the damage contained, Mulongo produced another moment of individual excellence.
A beautifully orchestrated attacking move culminated in Usama threading an exquisite pass into the forward’s path, and Mulongo responded with a magnificent curling finish in the 44th minute to complete his brace and establish an imposing three-goal halftime cushion.
It was a fitting conclusion to an extraordinary opening 45 minutes from a player who had contributed directly to all three goals.
With the contest firmly under their control, Vipers approached the second half with the composure of a team increasingly comfortable in its attacking identity.
Blacks Power, who had entered the encounter with three victories from their opening four league assignments, struggled to find a meaningful response against a disciplined Venoms backline.
Lavagne’s side continued to dictate proceedings, and the introduction of skipper Milton Karisa eventually brought another reward.
In the 80th minute, Mandela produced his second assist of the afternoon, whipping another delightful delivery into the penalty area for Karisa to guide a precise header into the bottom corner.
The fourth goal provided the finishing touch to an accomplished away performance, with Mandela’s creativity, Usama’s attacking intelligence and Karisa’s impact all deserving recognition.
Yet, the afternoon unquestionably belonged to Mulongo.
Beyond his two goals and assist, the forward’s contribution embodied the attacking sharpness and efficiency that Vipers will need to sustain if they are to successfully defend their domestic crown.
The victory lifts the Kitende outfit to seventh place on six points from three matches, while Blacks Power occupy fourth position with nine points from five outings.
More significantly, Vipers have now scored seven goals in their last two league matches, having previously dispatched Ntugasaze FC 3-0 at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
Two successive clean sheets further underline a side gradually finding the balance between attacking enterprise and defensive solidity.
For Lavagne, whose tenure began with an early domestic setback and disappointment on the continental stage, the emphatic triumph offers further evidence that his methods are beginning to translate into convincing performances.
