Having arrived in Kigali less than 72 hours ago and quickly shaken off the travel fatigue from their journey through Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) lay over, Vipers SC now turn their full attention to business as they launch their 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup campaign against Djibouti’s GC Garde Républicaine this evening.

Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00pm (EAT) at the magnificent Amahoro Stadium, one of East Africa’s finest football arenas, nestled in the scenic surroundings of Rwanda’s famed “Land of a Thousand Hills.”

For the Ugandan champions, there has been little time to settle into the altitude and conditions in Kigali. But with the tournament beginning almost immediately after their arrival, excuses are in short supply as the Venoms prepare to make their first statement of the new season.

Perfect Stage for a New Era

The CECAFA Kagame Cup presents the ideal opportunity for new head coach Denis Lavagne to begin shaping his side in competitive action.

While the French tactician acknowledges his squad is still building fitness during pre-season, he believes the regional championship offers invaluable preparation ahead of the domestic campaign and the club’s return to continental football – CAF Champions League.

“The CECAFA tournament is very good preparation for us and we have to do our best to win the game when we play,” Lavagne said ahead of the opening fixture.

For Lavagne, every minute in Kigali is another opportunity to develop cohesion, understand his players better and build the foundations for what promises to be a demanding campaign.

Every Point Will Matter

Vipers have been handed arguably one of the toughest groups in the competition.

Group A features tournament hosts APR FC, Kenyan heavyweights Gor Mahia and today’s opponents GC Garde Républicaine, leaving little margin for error in the battle for qualification.

Starting with maximum points would not only strengthen the Venoms’ hopes of reaching the knockout rounds but also inject confidence into a squad eager to impress under their new technical team.

Eyes Firmly on the Bigger Picture

Although regional honours remain a major objective, Lavagne insists the club’s long-term ambitions extend beyond Kigali.

“The main objective of the club is the Champions League, but CECAFA is a very good tournament. We are not ready, but all the teams are in the same situation.”

The Kagame Cup therefore becomes an important stepping stone as Vipers prepare for another CAF Champions League campaign, with competitive matches expected to accelerate the team’s tactical and physical development.

Managing Minutes, Chasing Victories

With several players still working towards peak fitness, the technical bench is expected to carefully rotate the squad throughout the tournament.

Lavagne is determined to strike the right balance between building match sharpness and protecting players from unnecessary injuries.

“We have to manage the time of the players in the game. I don’t want players to play too much and get injuries.”

Even so, the winning mentality remains non-negotiable.

“We are using this tournament to prepare for the season, but we have to win to start the season with a winning feeling.”

Beyond Garde Républicaine lie equally demanding assignments against APR FC and Gor Mahia, making a positive opening result even more significant.
