Vipers SC head coach Denis Lavagne has named a strong 19-man travelling squad for Saturday’s Confederation of African Football (Caf) Champions League first preliminary round second-leg clash against FC Nouadhibou in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

The Venoms head into the decisive encounter with the tie locked at 1-1 following last Saturday’s opening leg at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

Lavagne has opted for a balanced travelling party combining experience, midfield control, defensive versatility and attacking options as Vipers seek to complete the job away from home and advance to the second preliminary round.

Experience on board

Captain Milton Karisa headlines a group that includes several players accustomed to the demands of high-pressure domestic and continental football.

Karisa’s leadership and attacking intelligence will be important in a match where Vipers may need to manage difficult periods while remaining a threat on the counter.

Karim Watambala, meanwhile, travels after providing the assist for Hillary Mukundane’s opening goal in the first leg.

The midfielder’s delivery from set-pieces could again prove valuable, particularly if Vipers are presented with limited opportunities in the final third.

Mukundane also makes the trip after his early header gave the Venoms the lead at Kitende.

Options across the pitch

Lavagne has maintained depth throughout the squad.

In defence, Mukundane is joined by Dasyilva, Mandela, Tarabina, Mangoba and Mwere, giving the coach several options to deal with Nouadhibou’s physical and aerial threat.

The midfield group is equally versatile.

Watambala, Mbowa, Joseph Marvin Youngman, Joel Sserunjogi, Chukwuma, Farouk Miya and Usama provide a mixture of ball retention, creativity, energy and experience.

That variety could be crucial in Nouakchott, where Vipers will need to remain compact without surrendering their attacking ambition.

Miya also offers another source of quality from set-pieces after coming close to scoring from promising free-kick positions in the first leg.

Firepower for the finish

The forward line gives Lavagne several ways to approach the decisive assignment.

Yunus, Karisa, Gusto Mulongo and Cesar Manzoki all travel, ensuring Vipers have pace, movement and physical presence available in attack.

Manzoki will be one of the players to watch after his late goal against Nouadhibou was disallowed at Kitende.

His return gives Vipers an experienced focal point capable of occupying defenders and attacking crosses in the box.

With the tie level, that attacking depth could prove decisive if the game opens up in the second half.

The equation

Unlike the first leg, there will be no advantage to either side from the aggregate score when the second leg begins.

A Vipers victory will send the Ugandan champions through to the second preliminary round.

A Nouadhibou victory will eliminate the Venoms, while a draw after 90 minutes would send the tie into extra time, with penalties required if the teams remain level.

That leaves little room for calculation.

Vipers must therefore balance patience with ambition, knowing that the first goal could significantly alter the complexion of the contest.

One step from the next round

Qualification would keep Vipers’ Champions League group-stage ambition alive and take them into the second preliminary round.

The winner of the tie will meet the winner of the first-round contest between Rivers United of Nigeria and San Pedro of Côte d’Ivoire, which also finished 1-1 in its opening leg.

For Lavagne, the preparation has been done. The Frenchman has taken a balanced squad to Nouakchott that must execute the game plan and return to Uganda with Vipers’ continental journey still alive.

The next 90 minutes — and possibly more — will decide it.
