When Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa became Vipers Sports Club Chairman under the Bunamwaya SC name in 2000, his maiden speech had qualifying to the top tier League as the first priority.
And true to his words, recruitment of talented & energetic players, experienced technical personnel ensued in a bid to jump the qualification hurdle which the predecessors had failed.
After Four years of trying without progress, Coach Makumbi was hired in 2005 purposely to break the qualification jinx since he had successfully did the same with other seven clubs.
He arrived at Vipers from Buikwe Red Stars where he was recruited after guiding Lugazi United to the top tier league in 2002 at the Kajjansi hosted Super Mini League.
Upon his arrival at the club, he had qualification to the top tier as the biggest issue to start & was ably assisted by the administration thus creating a conducive environment for the tactician.
Makumbi made a number of signings in that season but three proved to be standout and became Venom Legends during their time with Vipers.
Ronald Seku, Jordan Tamale and Hassan Mubiru alias ‘Kasese’ played important roles in the gaffer’s only season at Vipers SC hence he was able to succeed where others failed.
The promotion magician used only one season to guide Vipers to Uganda Premier League status winning three major trophies in that qualification struggle.
The club won Wakiso district first division league, the Zonal mini league and the regional mini league before finally crowning it up with qualification to the top flight league.
Doing what his predecessors failed to do moreover in just one season, qualifies Coach Makumbi as one of the legendary Coaches at Vipers SC.
And during the Vipers Day celebrations, his good deeds were duly recognised thus awarding him for the achievements while still a Coach at the club.
Congratulations Coach Richard Makumbi and thanks for the contribution.
