Friday’s Result
Vipers SC 2-1 UPDF FC
Reigning Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC did themselves proud in the race to the championship after an edgy yet important 2-1 victory over UPDF FC on Friday.
Attacking gem Allan Okello and forward Eric Kenzo Kambale guided the Venoms to the much-needed three points at the St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
The win had Vipers leap from fifth to second on the log, having garnered 41 points in 21 matches.
Having played two games fewer, Vipers are three points behind leaders Kitara FC, who lost 1-0 to NEC FC on Thursday in Lugogo.
Vipers also sit just one point ahead of SC Villa, BUL FC and NEC FC, who are placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
Meanwhile, on the evening in Kitende, Okello broke the deadlock after just 11 minutes, with a brilliant curling drive from the right past UPDF FC goalkeeper Richard Anyama.
It should have been two five minutes later, but Frank Katongole missed an easy tap-in after superb individual work from Okello, who was a complete menace to the opponents’ backline all evening.
Into the second half, in the 54th minute, Kambale added a second with a near-post finish after a well-weighted ball from Moses Waiswa.
On the other hand, Bright Vuni then grabbed UPDF’s consolation in the 72nd minute to guarantee a nervy ending to the match.
Substitute Yunus Sentamu nearly added a third for Vipers but his stinging effort was superbly tamed by Anyama.
Vipers will return to action with a mouthwatering encounter against third-placed and rivals SC Villa on Tuesday, April 9th in a rescheduled fixture at the Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku.
