Stanbic Uganda Cup | Round of 16
Wednesday’s Result
Vipers SC 3-0 Iganga Young FC
After a tough run at the St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, Vipers SC emphatically returned to comfortably beat Iganga Young FC 3-0 in the Round of 16 of the Stanbic Uganda Cup.
Victories had shunned the Venoms at home in the past two Uganda Premier League matches, drawing 0-0 and 1-1 to Gaddafi FC and Soltilo Bright Stars FC, respectively.
Strikes from Karim Watambala, Mohamed Salem Ekbad and Fazil Tumwine on Wednesday sunk Iganga in the absence of head coach Charles Livingstone Mbabazi, who is down with malaria.
Watambala struck through a well-placed penalty two minutes after the half-hour mark to kickstart a dominant evening.
That came after the Venoms had missed numerous opportunities from Allan Okello who was denied by the goalkeeper Joseph Wigan and Milton Karisa whose header crashed against the crossbar.
Fumador Asiwome had also failed to connect to a fine Okello pass in the early stages of the match.
Five minutes after restart, Asiwome turned provider to Salem, who curled in a superb drive to make it 2-0.
In the 72nd minute, Watambala, who had been brilliant all evening, laid a sumptuous pass for Tumwine to tuck in an empty net for his maiden senior goal at Vipers.
Meanwhile, Vipers have joined KCCA FC, BUL FC, Kitara, NEC, Pajule Lions FC and Police FC in the quarterfinals of the Uganda Cup.
