Stanbic Uganda Cup | R32
Thursday’s Result
Rugarama 0(4)-(5)0 Vipers SC
Defending champions Vipers SC were forced to dig deep to get past a resilient Rugarama FC team to secure a spot in the Round of 16 of the Stanbic Uganda Cup.
The Venoms beat Rugarama via a 5-4 penalty shootout victory, after it had ended one-all at full-time.
Hugely promising youngster Abubakali Walusimbi scored Vipers’ only goal to make it his first with the senior team.
Both teams struggled to create clear-cut goalscoring opportunities with the hosts defending deep to limit us to just a handful.
The heavy rains and soggy playing surface didn’t do the Venoms justice either, with the bumps on the pitch limiting the smooth flash-forward passes.
However, even on a not-so adventurous evening, Vipers still managed to squeeze through to the Round of 16 of the 50th edition of the Uganda Cup.
It should be noted that Vipers had also initially struggled in the preceding round as they narrowly beat Lugazi Stars FC 2-1.
