STANBIC UGANDA CUP FINAL
The Date: June 3rd, 2023
The Contest: Police FC vs. Vipers SC
The Time: 3pm
The Venue:
 Akii-Bua Stadium, Lira

Vipers’ quest to win a historic double remained intact after beating Busoga United 5-0 on a day SC Villa lost 1-0 to URA FC, guaranteeing a sixth (6th) Uganda Premier League title to the Venoms.

This Saturday’s Uganda Cup final thus presents Vipers an opportunity to fight for a league and Cup double which has always eluded us whenever under such situation.

History shows that only SC Villa on six occasions (1986, 1988, 1989, 1998, 2000 & 2002), Express (1995) and KCCA (2017) are the only Ugandan clubs to have ever achieved that feat.

On our side, this is the third occasion we are playing a Uganda Cup final having already wrapped up the Uganda Premier League title.

All the previous two occasions we have come close we have failed to reach the finish line.

During the 2017/18 Football season under Jorge Miguel Da Costa, Vipers won the league and reached the Uganda Cup final against  KCCA only to lose 1-0 to the Kasasiro lads through a Julius Poloto goal.

Fast forward to 2020/21 season under the guidance of Brazilian Roberto Oliveira aka Robertinho, we emphatically won the league title with seven matches to spare and reached the Uganda Cup final against BUL, again failing on the double triumph.

It’s now Alex Isabirye’s turn to try achieving the feat against a Big League outfit Police FC, who despite being in the second tier league, are determined to spoil the party.

“I know the game won’t be easy. There is no weak team which reaches a final. It’s been tough to get here but only one of us can be crowned champions, and we have to make sure it’s us.” stated Isabirye in a media press conference this morning in Lira.

For a neutral UPL follower, it’s a great viewing seeing two great clubs challenging for the title and hopefully it can be something great for the Venoms as the season ends.

In Police, we are meeting a determined opponent who has nothing to lose but everything to gain as echoed by their Head Coach Angelo Lonyensi in the press conference ahead of the tie.

“We will give everything and, when I say everything, it’s everything… the fans can rely on that,” said the Police coach.

For Police fans, you get the feeling that stopping Vipers is very important as it comes along with a ticket to next season’s CAF Confederations Cup.

But with just eight doubles shared amongst SC Villa, KCCA and Express in the history of Uganda men’s football, Vipers know they are on the verge of true greatness if they pull it off.
