UGANDA PREMIER LEAGUE
Saturday’s Result
Vipers SC 5-0 Busoga United
Vipers Sports Club saved best for last. Season long, they didn’t look like they would ever string together such a display.
But they were superb and scintillating in equal measure.
Busoga United were annihilated 5-0 win by a ruthless Vipers enroute the latter lifting a sixth Uganda Premier League title – with history made along the way as Vipers defended the league title for the first time.
The Venoms smiled home after goals from Yunus Sentamu, Bright Anukani, Martin Kizza and an Abubakar Lawal brace helped them move to 53 points to defend the title at the St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on goals difference.
It came in the aftermath of SC Villa’s defeat 1-0 to URA FC at Wankulukuku, to have them move third with 52 points.
After making a bright start, Vipers had their exerted pressure repaid after Lawal capitalised on a defensive mixup to loop the ball into the net in the 15th minute.
In the 21st minute, the Venoms doubled their lead through Sentamu’s thunderbolt from the edge of the box.
The Venoms nearly had a third and fourth in the next ten minutes, but Cromwel Rwothoomio was on both occasions denied by goalkeeper John Okurut.
In the 54th minute, Vipers finally made it three after Lawal headed in some superb delivery from Ashraf Mandela.
A minute after the hour-mark, substitute Kizza added a fourth with a close range finish past Okurut.
In the 74th minute, Anukani made it five with a delicate delightful finish as Busoga failed to clear a Kizza corner.
The Venoms should have added more, but the damage had already been made, for Alex Isabirye’s charges to dance along with the fans in jubilation.
