STANBIC UGANDA CUP | QUARTERS
Friday’s Result
Vipers SC 4-1 Calvary FC
Vipers didn’t have to engage second gear as they breezed past giant slayers Calvary FC 4-1 in their quarterfinal encounter of the Stanbic Uganda Cup on Friday.
The Venoms secured their place in the semifinals thanks to a pair of braces from prolific Yunus Sentamu and Nigerian stalwart Abubakar Lawal to render Junior Andama’s strike a mere consolation at St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende.
Vipers made a brilliant start and it didn’t take long before the deadlock was broken through a sumptuous Sentamu free kick in the ninth minute.
Seven minutes later, Alex Isabirye’s men doubled the lead through Lawal who finished off some brilliant piece of play from Sentamu and Garcia Mpongo.
Sign of victory
In the 19th minute, Sentamu completed his brace with another excellent strike – a curling left shot from the edge of the box to the top right corner.
It should have been four and five in the 25th and 30th minute but on both occasions, Lawal and Sentamu were denied by goalkeeper Hadji Sukuru.
The guests pulled one back through a great Junior Andama free-kick after Torach had fouled Michael Kedi in a dangerous position.
After restart, Vipers grabbed the fourth through Lawal’s well taken penalty following a foul on skipper Milton Karisa.
Despite controlling proceedings till the end, there were no extra goals for the home team but none was literally needed as the job had already been done.
The dream of a season double remains very much a possibility for Vipers, for now! But first they must clinically tackle their upcoming semifinal duel against a yet to-be-communicated opponent.
