STANBIC UGANDA CUP
Tuesday’s Result | R64
Bujumbura United 0(1)-(4)0 Vipers SC
Vipers Sports Club made it to the Round of 32 of the Stanbic Uganda Cup after ejecting Bujumbura United 4-1 in the post-match penalties after both side has endured a barren stalemate on Tuesday at Kibanjwa Primary Playgrounds.
Custodian Fabien Mutombora was in beast mode saving one penalty as the quartet of Bright Anukani, Disan Galiwango, Desire Tety and Ashraf Mandela buried theirs home to hand new gaffer Beto Bianchi Pellister a spot in the next round on his first competitive outing with the club.
End-to-end stuff
The spot-kicks followed a barren stalemate at the full-time whistle, in a game where the Venoms missed a host of chances to break the deadlock.
In the opening half, defender Hillary Mukundane headed inches over the bar in the ninth minute, after a Karim Watambala free-kick, as the opening exchanges stayed scoreless.
In the 35th minute, winger Abdu Lumala threatened but his strong shot was dealt with by the hosts’ goalkeeper.
In the second stanza, new signing Desire Tety should have struck open, but the opposition goalkeeper yet again denied him from close range.
Substitute Bright Anukani thought he had grabbed the day’s goal late in the game, but his shot rattled the woodwork, to send the tie into penalties.
The Venoms are yet to learn their Round of 32 opponents but will return in action with a continental showdown against Raja Casablanca.
