STARTIMES UGANDA PREMIER LEAGUE

Friday’s Result

Vipers SC 0-0 Soltilo Bright Stars

We got off our 2022/23 Uganda Premier League season to a somewhat unpleasant start, after a 0-0 stalemate with Soltilo Bright Stars, at the St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Friday.

Despite hugely dominating the game, creating a number of great scoring opportunities, the Venoms could just not put the ball past our opponents’ goalkeeper, Hassan Matovu.

Our best first half opportunities fell to Yunus Sentamu, with his first, a snapshot, coming in the 32nd minute, that he somewhat couldn’t hit on target.

Ten minutes later, ‘The Hitman’ headed inches wide an excellent Abdu Lumala cross, to leave matters levelled in the first stanza.

We upped the tempo and nearly broke the deadlock in the 67th minute, but, Bright Anukani missed a seater after good work by the dangerous Lumala.

Lumala, who was a menace to the Bright Stars’ backline all evening, thought he had made it 1-0 five minutes later, but his stinging shot was parried away by a strong Matovu hand.

A minute to the 90th minute, Vipers should have grabbed the winner but substitute Cromwell Rwothomio was superbly denied by both the goalkeeper and the crossbar.

Two minutes later, Lumala incredibly missed the target after everyone thinking he had scored, to sum up an lucky evening.

Both teams are now joint top of the log with one point apiece.

The Venoms will return to action with a home bout in the CAF Champions League against TP Mazembe on Independence day (October 9) at St Mary’s Stadium-Kitende.
