STARTIMES UGANDA PREMIER LEAGUE

Wednesday’s Result

Vipers SC 2-0 Busoga United

Vipers opened up a four-point advantage at the top of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League (SUPL) following a 2-0 home win over Busoga United at the St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende this afternoon.

And with nine games left and KCCA FC having drawn their previous three games, the momentum appears to be with Vipers at the moment. They however had to bounce back from last week’s 1-0 defeat to Tooro United but recovered well and went ahead through a firm header from Hillary Mukundane after a Bright Anukani delivery.

Mukundane’s former colleague at Mbarara, Paul Mucureezi, then got it on the act with the substitute rifling in the second goal late in the second half to secure vital points. The result left Busoga deeply involved in a relegation dogfight that has seven teams separated by just six points.

The Venoms missed a host of clear-cut first half opportunities including a fifth minute penalty that was blazed over the bar by Bright Anukani.

In the eighth and tenth minute, Cesar Manzoki and Milton Karisa respectively failed to convert from point-blank range, with the goal at their mercy.

As the visitors looked to be getting comfortable in possession and starting to fully settle in the game, Mukundane in the 25th minute, headed in an Anukani freekick to mark his first goal in Vipers’ colours.

The home team continued with more relentless attacks and in the 38th minute, a number of red shirts failed to connect with Anukani’s freekick, with the goal yet again at their mercy.

The guests started the second stanza the more energized team and nearly grabbed a leveller in the 55th minute but Shaka Ssozi’s miscued shot sailed inches wide.

At 70 minutes, skipper Halid Lwaliwa’s headed effort aiming for the top corner was superbly saved by Busoga custodian Andrew Ssekandi.

Seven minutes to the 90 minute mark, substitutes Najib Yiga and Paul Mucureezi combined well before the latter unleashed a belter from outside the box to make it 2-0.

Vipers will return to action on Saturday this week in the Stanbic Uganda Cup round of 16 with a tie against Fufa Big League side, Kataka FC at St. Mary’s Stadium.
