A lot has changed since our last game on June 2 – 111 days ago. On that day, Vipers SC invaded Bombo Military Barracks and beat SC Villa 2-0 in the quarterfinal second leg of the Stanbic Uganda Cup.
Vipers SC, then under interim coach Paul Kiwanuka, had drawn 1-all at the St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende in the first leg with young striker Lawrence Tezikya scoring.
Midfielder Bobosi Byaruhanga and forward Milton Karisa bagged the goals to ensure passage to the semifinals that would have been double-legged before the Covid-19 pandemic changed the order.
The Uganda Premier League (UPL) was ended prematurely to hand then-leaders Express FC the title with four games to spare, ending Vipers hopes of a fifth diadem.
Vipers now play fellow UPL side Police FC in a one-off semifinal on Tuesday September 21, 2021 at the Fufa Technical Centre, Njeru.
It will be the first competitive game for our new coach Roberto Oliviera known as Robertinho and hus assistant Marcelo Cardoso. The Brazilians were unveiled on August 27, 2021.
He has a few weeks to learn about his players and will want to start with a bang, adding to Vipers’ solitary Uganda Cup triumph in 2016.
“After 3 weeks of hardwork, we are happy and set for the encounter against Police,” explained Cardoso at today’s press conference at Fufa House, Mengo.
“We are far from 100 percent fitness levels so far but with the dedication the players are showing each day in training, we believe we are ready to play against Police FC. Players are working very hard and good improvement thus everything is going according to our plan. Police is a traditional club with high expectations thus we expect a good show.”
TEAM NEWS:
Team captain Halid Lwaliwa has emerged as a major doubt for Tuesday’s clash with Police FC, having been forced off in a World Cup Qualifier match against Kenya during National duty with a knee injury.
Lawrence Tezikya, who suffered an ankle problem as last season ended prematurely, is still ruled out.
