Vipers SC v Kitara FC – St Mary’s Stadium

It has been a long road of recovery for Mugammad Shaban.

The 22-year-old suffered a knee injury while still with Morocco’s side Raja Casablanca training with the first team in pre-season last year and was out for more than 493 days.

After such a long spell on the sidelines, the striker couldn’t have hoped for a better afternoon on Saturday (December 12, 2020).

Coach Fred Kajoba handed him his first-team debut in the Uganda Premier League against Wakiso Giants FC and Shaban topped a special afternoon with a 7th minute goal.

Speaking after the game, Shaban was pleased with his goal, disgusted by the result but pleased to see a great all around team performance.

“It was a good workout. Obviously, am disgusted it was a disappointing result for us because we wanted maximum points, but it was good to get 90 minutes into the legs, because l have not done that for quite some time.”

“I’m happy to make my debut and score my first goal for the club but a lot of work to do and we focus on an important reaction next game.”

The striker jumped high and nodded the ball home beyond Wakiso’ goalkeeper Derrick Emukule inside the opening minutes from Disan Galiwango’s corner kick.

While Shaban is targeting minutes in the first team in the future, he doesn’t want to get ahead of himself. For the moment, he is pleased to be back playing after his long spell on the sidelines.

“It made me stronger,” he explained “but I still have a long way [to go]. To score on my debut made me happy of course and I think it will help with the confidence.”
