Despite the Coronavirus (Covid-19) continuing to bite elsewhere, it has fortunately stayed away from Uganda to the benefit of title-seeking Vipers Sports Club.

The Venoms resumed business today with intensive training sessions as they look to be as fit as fiddles with a gruesome StarTimes Uganda Premier League (SUPL) final bend looming in the month of May.

The players have been on a temporary break since their last league encounter against Wakiso Giants on March 6 which ended in a barren draw at the Kabaka Kyabaggu Sports Stadium, Wakisha.

That result left us four points ahead of title-challenging KCCA (50 points) and although fate stays in our hands, there is work to do.

With 25 matches played, we must endure a bumper schedule of playing all the five remaining fixtures in a space of 18 days and pick up the necessary points if we are to notch the coveted 2019-2020 SUPL championship.

Earlier changes

Initially, the league had been earmarked to resume inearly May after the Championship of African Nations (CHAN) tournament, however, following suspension of the same competition by Confederation of African Football (CAF) due to the Covid-19 pandemic on top of President Yoweri Museveni’s directive on ‘banning’ sports activities for 32 days, it remains to be seen how the Uganda Premier League (UPL) Secretariat will readjust the arrangement.

Vipers’ crucial remaining fixtures are; away to Express and Tooro United together with home ties against Busoga United, Bright Stars and Police. These fixtures must be negotiated in clinical fashion.

During today’s workout, all the returning players were in joyous mood and looked in perfect shape as they participated in the cardio drills under the strength and conditioning coach Ram Nyakana Mpuga.

Coach Fred Kajoba and his technical team will be anxious to deliver the title to their partisan fans come May 23.
