Vipers 1-0 Kyetume

8’ Paul Mucureezi

It was a debut made in heaven for Paul Mucureezi on his reunion with coach Edward Golola as the exciting midfielder hit the back of the net to give Vipers a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Kyetume at St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende.

The game was of much importance being not only the first of the decade but more so the maiden of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League (SUPL) Second Round to set the omens right for a highly-anticipated crucial title run-in.

Fresh from Mbarara City, Mucureezi got the fans singing his name early on with a pin-point shot in the eighth minute to help the Venoms to maximum points and forthwith regain their four-point cushion at the top of the log with 39 points after 16 outings.

Donning his trademark No.14 jersey that he has made famous since he broke onto the topflight scene while still a stalwart at KCCA FC, Mucureezi combined well with lanky forward Tito Okello whose pass found him unmarked where he duly blazed past Kyetume shot stopper Joel Mutakubwa.

Teenage defender Jacob Okao, who partnered Geoffrey Wasswa in the absence of skipper Halid Lwaliwa, was the other player making his club debut and he did more than well to hold his own.

Bayo chances

Marksman Fahad Bayo nearly doubled the lead but his effort went wide in the 20th minute. Three minutes later, he headed wide another chance.

At the hour mark, coach Edward Golola made the first change introducing Brian Nkuubi for Okello.

But the match had Bayo’s missed chances written allover it. The prize striker thought he had finally doubled the lead in the 72nd minute when his headed effort off Nkuubi’s cross rattled the upright and seemingly crossed the white chalk but the assistant referee thought otherwise.

In the closing stages of the game, coach Golola made two more changes bringing on Rahmat Ssenfuka and Umar Kyebatala (another debutant from the St Mary’s Kitende – SMASK Academy) for Frank ‘Zaga’ Tumwesigye and Abdu Karim Watambala respectively.

But there were no additional scores in the match with Mucureezi’s early goal settling the match and winning him the Man of Match Award against a bogey Kyetume side and ensuring Vipers deservedly stay in the driver’s seat.
