Vipers will face immediate neighbours Kajjansi United in the 2020 Stanbic Uganda Cup round of 64 in a quest to recapture the title we last won in 2016.
This was revealed during the draws conducted yesterday morning at Turaco hall, Serena hotel in Kampala in the presence of the sponsors Stanbic Bank Head of Marketing and Communication, Daniel Ogong.
Kajjansi United who ply their trade in the Buganda regional league will be facing Vipers for the first time in this tournament despite having played two friendly matches with the latter before.
The draw means the Venoms will make a short trip to visit their neighbours between January 20-26 to determine who will progress to the round of 32.
Memories of an exit at this very stage against Kyambogo United in 2015, are still fresh in the minds of club faithful thus Edward Golola’s side must treat the encounter seriously as they aim to proceed further than this level.
Last year, we were knocked out by fellow league opponents Proline FC (who went on the win the cup) at the quarter final away at Lugogo when Ibrahim Bonyo scored in extra time after Tadeo Lwanga had cancelled out Nurudin Bunjo opener for the hosts.
At this level last season, Rushekere Growers FC were drawn against the Venoms but failed to turn up for the engagement at the St Mary’s stadium hence we progressed to the next round subsequently.
The breakdown for the top performers will see the winner take Shs: 40M, runners up Shs: 20M, Semifinalists (shs: 12M each), quarter finalists (Shs: 6M each) and round of 16 (Shs: 3M each).
And the overall winner of the Uganda Cup earns the right to represent the country in the Caf Confederations Cup and after a year’s absence at the continent, Vipers will fancy their chances against the regional league neighbours.
