Saturday’s Result

Busoga United 0-1 Vipers SC

A late goal from youngster Bobosi Byaruhanga secured us precious three points as we kept our hopes of finishing the first round of the Uganda Premier League top alive with a crucial victory at the Mighty Arena in Jinja.

For so much of this game it seemed as if we would be frustrated against an obdurate Busoga United side that kept chances to a minimum.

We got off to a sluggish start that nearly saw us fall behind when Joel Madondo shot onto the roof of the net, before Fabien Mutombora was called into action to make a fine save to deny from close range Madondo again.

Karim Watambala gaining possession of the ball.

Brian Kalumba was straight at Busoga United, coming close to opening the scoring with 15 minutes on the clock when goalkeeper Rogers Omeddwa fumbled to hold the ball in his area.

Slowly we began to grow into the game, with Brian Nkuubi taking aim from 20 yards as he looked to add another goal to his account this season.

Edward Golola’s men struggled to find the same intensity and focus they had shown against Kyetume FC three days earlier, although Fahad Bayo forced a smart save out of Omeddwa.

Dan Sserunkuma went closet with a fierce drive that rattled off an opponent on the stroke of half-time, but despite our best efforts we found it tough to break down Busoga United before the breather.

Karim Watambala was dispossessed when well-placed in the area, Nkuubi saw a deflected effort palmed wide and frustrations continued to grow.

The game had been, in truth, pretty flat but Vipers were brighter after the restart, with Bashir Asiku soon getting sight of goal only for his brilliant header going on to the roof of the net.

But with three minutes of added time to the end, we had our reward when Bobosi Byaruhanga who came on in the 68th minute replacing Watambala controlled well Fahad Bayo’s through pass to put the ball beyond Omeddwa’s reach with alot of calmness.

Coach Golola made two changes to his line-up from the team that started against Kyetume FC with experienced midfielder Nkuubi starting ahead of Byaruhanga while Kalumba came in for Allan kayiwa who was benched.

The win was enough to settle this clash that saw the Venoms register their first ever Victory away against the Jinja based club. Sometimes you just need to dig out a result – and that is exactly what we did.
