StarTimes Uganda Premier League
Saturday’s Result
Vipers 3-0 Express FC

Vipers sports club turned on the style enroute to sealing a comfortable 3-0 victory over Express in the early kick off fixture of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League at St Mary’s stadium, Kitende on October 12.

Coach Edward Golola made just one change to the team that beat Police 3-1 on Wednesday – October 9 – and it was a hugely positive one as Abraham Ndugwa came in for Allan Kayiwa, who was missed the tie due to national team duty.

Victory was required especially after BUL FC beat Tooro United FC away in Fort Portal to move five points above the Venoms and the lads made light work of Express to ensure this was the case.

Vipers took to the field in a 4-1-3-2 formation with Rahmat Ssenfuka sitiing in the deeper role with Bobos Byaruhanga on the right and Ndugwa on the left as Karim Watambara operated centrally behind Fahad Bayo and Dan Sserunkuma.

Express started brightly oozing confidence, but the Venoms quickly assumed control as Bayo’s pass to Sserunkuma after bursting through from the right, was ably dealt with by goalkeeper Tony Kyamera in the 2nd minute.

However Golola’s boys early dominance paid off after just eight minutes when Bobos delivered a lofted pass for Bayo to slot home his sixth league goal in seven matches.

The red eagles almost equalised with a sensational long range shot from a distance by Muhammad Yiga but Fabien Mutombora was a match with a fine save.

At the half one mark, Vipers earned a freekick closer to the touchline however Bobos’ delivery into the area eluded both Bayo and Sserunkuma before the ball went out begging.

And towards the breather, Ndugwa and Watambara exchanged neat passes to release Bayo but Kyamera was quicker off the goal line to thwart any could be danger.

Vipers started the second half strongly as they didn’t rest on laurels but continued to press for another goal which finally came in the 73rd minute with Kalumba sumptuous pass finding Bayo who produced a brilliant finish.

Moments later, it was three for the hosts as Bayo turned provider with a pass to Kalumba who hammered the last nail into Express coffin.

Golola used all the substitutes bringing off Sserunkuma for Kalumba, Watambara for Frank ‘Zaga’ Tumwesigye and Ndugwa for Denis Mwemezi though we enjoyed some excellent chances late on, we were left to settle for a 3-0 victory to move into second position on the 16-team league logo.
