It needed a penalty shoot-out to do it but the Venoms are into the finals of the Pilsner Super 8 tournament at the expense of Mbarara City FC.
Thanks to goalkeeper Fabian Mutombora who was the hero as he made save after save after save before saving a spotkick and converting the winning penalty.
Brian Aheebwa scored for Mbarara City in the 78th minute before substitute Tito Okello leveled matters later.

But it was Mutombora and his Mbarara City counterpart Mohammed Sekeba who owned the game with timely saves and breathtaking reflexes all in the name of keeping their teams in the game.
Mutombora showcased his exploits as early as the 21st minute when he tamed Paul Mucureezi’s volley, it was also the first realistic scoring opportunity of the game.

Sekeba did the same five minutes later when he outstretched himself to deny Abraham Ndugwa’s effort from 19 yards.
Five minutes to halftime, Denis Mwemezi whipped on a teasing cross, Sekeba tipped it out for a corner.
Mutombora wasn’t going to be outshone, a Mucureezi freekick was connected by Jasper Aheebwa, but Mutombora was in the right place at the right time to parry the ball over the bar.

Abdul Karim Watambala, Mwemezi, Ndugwa, and Bashir Asiku all got close for Vipers but they weren’t close enough.
Mbarara had the first bite on the cherry, Brian Aheebwa capitalised on Halid Lwaliwa’s complacency before looping the ball over the advancing Mutombora.

But that lead didn’t last long, Vipers launched and got back into the game immediately, Ndugwa found Okello, whose right shot bounced off the first post before crossing the line.
Both sets of players were exhausted and it’s penalties that were needed to determine who advances.
Okello, Allan Kayiwa, Ndugwa, Frank ‘Zaga’ Tumwesigye all converted their penalties.

It’s Ronald Otti’s penalty that couldn’t go past Mutombora who also took the responsibility of scoring the one that decided the game.
Vipers won the game 5-3 to make it to the finals where they will play either KCCA FC or Onduparaka.
