Stanbic Uganda Cup
Saturday’s Result
Vipers SC 1-0 Kiboga Young FC
Vipers Sports Club midfielder Abraham Ndugwa saved the best for last as he scored a late goal to seal a 1-0 victory over Kiboga Young in Cup of 16 played today at the St Marys stadium in Kitende.
Its not the performance everybody expected but it was enough to secure qualification to the next round as the Venoms bid to claim a second the maiden triumph in 2016.
Coach Micheal Nam Ouma made three changes all in as goalkeeper Fabien paved way for Derrick Ochan while Abdul Karim Niyigizimana replaced Ibrahim Kiyemba and Henry Katongole started in central alongside Halid Lwaliwa to give Livingstone Mulondo rest, upfront Dan Serunkuuma and Hamis Kiiza were included to give the team an experienced attacking sheen.
Taking on a club playing in the second tier league, Vipers will have been confident of securing victory, however, we suffered a lack of quality in the final third as the Fufa Big League side enjoyed a certain level for spells in the fiercely contested cup tie.
Throughout the first half, the game was quite with neither side creating clear opportunities save Dan Serunkuuma’s unbelievable miss in front of a yawning net in the 12th minute from Aziz Kayondo’s cross from the left.
With no team making a change at the interval, Vipers slightly increased the tempo of the game as they pushed for a lead, Ibrahim Tembo’s long throw-ins caused all sorts of problems to the Kiboga Young side but their goalkeeper Magoola kept his team in the game tipping Hamis Kiiza’s effort in the 30th minute over the bar.
In a desperate attempt to find a breakthrough, Ouma brought on Ndugwa, Tito Okello together with Joseph Janjali for Serunkuuma, Nizigiyimana and Kiiza respectively but the contest remained balanced as the to delaying tactics in anticipation of a penalty shoot out.
Halid hit the crossbar with a header from another Tembo perfect throw in the 50th minute however moments later, Ndugwa on a defensive mix up following a long from Tembo again to poach home what proved to be the winner.
Despite the continued resistance from Kiboga Young, the Venoms held on and eventually throw-in out a slim victory to ensure progress to the for a fourth consecutive time since 2015 but our next opponents will be determined after draws are conducted.
