Friday’s Result

Vipers SC 1-0 Kirinya Jinja SSS FC

It was far from a vintage display but it didn’t need to be as Vipers got back to winning ways after sealing an incredible 1-0 win over Kirinya Jinja in a fierce contest that saw the Venoms close the gap on KCCA to three points.

Up against a determined Jinja side under a new interim coach in Bogere following Charles Ayiekoh’s resignation a few days ago, pressure was always going to be on the home team in keeping pursuit of the league leaders.

There were changes from the lineup that started the game against Mbarara City with Halid Lwaliwa coming in for Henry Katongole at centre back and Abraham Ndugwa replacing Rahmat Ssenfuka in midfield.

The match began at a high tempo, with the home fans creating an impressive atmosphere though few chances were created as the visitors happily sat back to catch us on the break.

Workhorse: Innocent Wafula worked his socks off as Vipers ensured maximum points were in the bag.

As early as the 6th minute, Innocent Wafula started a quick counter attack by releasing Tito Okello who missed a good chance to break the deadlock and we nearly paid five minutes later as Joel Madondo brushed a cross which found Fabien Mutombora alert.

Tito was particularly wasteful with some poor decisions in attack however in the 39th minute, Innocent Wafula started a brilliant move, passed to Abraham Ndugwa whose perfect cross was cooly slotted home by Tito in what proved to be winner.

During the second half, Coach Micheal Nam Ouma made changes in a bid to increase the goal margin to no avail as Rahmat Ssenfuka, Steven Mukwala plus Duncan Sseninde replaced Tito, Serunkuuma and Ndugwa respectively.

Loathed & Loved: Midfield maestro Moses Waiswa works his magic enroute to dribbling past a Kirinya Jinja SS defender.

However in the 82nd minute, Mutombora fumbled with a cross which almost rested in our net but Halid intervened with a header clearance off the line to the delight of home fans.

Tempers flared towards the closing stages of the game as Wafula lost his cool thus was cautioned in the 85th minute and six minutes later, Ibrahim Kiyemba received marching orders after a second bookable offence for time wasting, Tadeo Lwanga was also booked in the first half.

Honest Effort: Steven Mukwala was in his element and willing to win possession battles for the Venoms.

Brian Miiro Nsubuga’s final whistle was greeted with delight from Vipers faithful as the lads held on to a crucial win to record their ninth league victory but praise should go to Halid who did well at centre back helped by another excellent showing from man of the match Livingstone Mulondo.

Next up for Vipers is an away fixture against rejuvenated Nyamityoboora who thumped Police 4-1, the game is at Kakyeeka stadium in Mbarara on Tuesday 5th February 2019.

Tireless Marksman: Last season’s top scorer Dan Muzeyi Sserunkuma tracks a loose ball in vain.
