Vipers SC needed to show character and zeal this week with two crucial games on card for us.
This included a League game against BUL FC and a return leg against CS Constantine in the CAF Champions League.
The first hurdle was successfully completed as the Venoms put up a brilliant performance on Wednesday to win 3-1 against BUL FC in Jinja.
Dan Sserunkuma, Tito Okello and Duncan Sseninde scored a goal each to guide the team to victory, a result that propelled us to second place on 24 points.
Manager Javier Martinez Espinosa lauded the players for a spirited performance and indicated that the win brings confidence ahead of Saturday encounter.
“We have two crucial games this week and we have managed to get through this one successfully. The players were excellent and showed great character even when BUL FC tried to come back in the game,” he said before adding, “It is important that we won this game because it gives us confidence ahead of the Champions League on Saturday.”
The gaffer was also delighted that the team scored three goals for the first time this season stating that it is important to score as many goals as possible.
I’m happy that we scored three goals today. I believe we create so many chances every other game but we have not been effective enough. However, this can be the start for us to score many goals.
Javier Martinez Espinosa, Vipers head coach
On Taddeo Lwanga’s injury, the coach said he will wait for the team doctor’s report to access whether the skipper will be available on Saturday.
“It was unfortunate that he got an injury towards the end of first half but I cannot make an assessment now albeit I talked to the player and he told me it was a simple knock.”
Vipers SC will face Algerian outfit CS Constantine at St. Mary’s stadium on Saturday in the return leg of the first round of the CAF Champions League seeking to overturn the 1-0 defeat.
The winner on aggregate will advance to the group stages.
